# Configure Knowledge Base Navigation and Layout in Nulix

> Configure your Nulix sidebar order, top navigation bar, homepage layout, footer links, and search bar placement to help readers find content quickly.

A well-structured navigation system helps your readers find answers without friction. Nulix lets you customize every layer of navigation — from the sidebar that organizes your content hierarchy to the top bar, homepage layout, footer, and search bar placement — so you can shape the browsing experience to fit your audience's needs.

## Sidebar Navigation

The sidebar is populated automatically from your categories and articles. When you create a category, it appears as a collapsible section in the sidebar. Articles nested inside a category are listed beneath it in the order you specify on the **Organize Content** page.

To control the order of categories and articles in the sidebar, drag and drop them in **Settings > Navigation > Sidebar Order**. Changes take effect immediately for all visitors.

> [!TIP]
>
> Group related articles into tightly scoped categories rather than creating one large catch-all section. Readers scan sidebar labels to orient themselves — shorter, descriptive category names improve discoverability.

## Top Navigation Bar

The top navigation bar sits above your knowledge base content and is ideal for linking readers to other parts of your product experience — such as your main website, pricing page, or community forum.

To add a custom link to the top nav:

**1. Open Top Bar settings**

Go to **Settings > Navigation > Top Bar**.

**2. Add a new link**

Click **Add Link**, then enter the **label** (the visible text) and the **URL**.

**3. Save your changes**

Click **Save**. Repeat these steps for each additional link. You can drag links to reorder them at any time.

> [!TIP]
>
> Keep your top navigation links to **5 or fewer**. A crowded top bar overwhelms readers and dilutes the most important destinations. Reserve top-nav slots for high-priority external links — your sidebar already handles in-knowledge-base navigation.

## Homepage Layout

Your knowledge base homepage is the first thing readers see. Nulix offers three layout options:

**Grid**

Displays your categories as visual cards arranged in a responsive grid. Best for knowledge bases with many distinct topic areas that benefit from equal visual weight.

**List**

Shows categories and featured articles in a scannable vertical list. Works well for smaller knowledge bases or audiences that prefer a document-style experience.

**Featured Articles**

Highlights a curated set of articles at the top of the homepage, followed by the full category listing. Use this layout to surface your most popular or most important content immediately.

Change your homepage layout in **Settings > Navigation > Homepage Layout**, then select your preferred option and click **Save**.

## Footer Links

The footer appears at the bottom of every page in your knowledge base. Use it to add links to support resources, legal pages (privacy policy, terms of service), and social media profiles.

To manage footer links:

**1. Open Footer settings**

Go to **Settings > Navigation > Footer**.

**2. Add a footer link**

Click **Add Footer Link**, then enter the **label** and **URL**.

**3. Assign a column**

Give each link a **column label** (for example, `Company` or `Legal`) to group related links into separate footer columns.

**4. Save your changes**

Click **Save**. Your updated footer is immediately visible to all visitors.

## Search Bar

Nulix includes a built-in search bar powered by AI. You can configure both its visibility and its position.

**Top Bar**

Places the search input inline within the top navigation bar. Recommended for knowledge bases where search is the primary way readers find content.

**Floating**

Renders a floating search button (typically in the bottom-right corner) that expands into a full search modal when clicked. Useful when you want to preserve top-bar real estate for navigation links.

To enable or disable the search bar, or to change its position, go to **Settings > Navigation > Search Bar** and toggle or select the option that fits your layout. Learn more about search capabilities in the [Search Overview](search/overview) and [AI Search](search/ai-search) pages.
