# Organizing Your Nulix Knowledge Base: Categories and Tags

> Structure your Nulix knowledge base using categories, tags, and sort options to keep content logical and easy to navigate for every reader.

A well-organized knowledge base is just as important as well-written articles. When readers arrive with a question, they should be able to navigate to the answer in seconds — not minutes. Nulix gives you categories, tags, drag-and-drop ordering, and flexible sort options to keep your content logical, discoverable, and easy to maintain as your knowledge base grows.

## Creating Categories

Categories are the top-level containers that group related articles together. To create a new category:

**1. Open the Categories panel**

From your Nulix dashboard, select your knowledge base and click **Categories** in the left sidebar.

**2. Add a new category**

Click **New Category** in the top-right corner. Enter a **name** and an optional **description** — the description appears beneath the category name on your public knowledge base homepage.

**3. Set a category icon (optional)**

Choose an icon from the picker to give the category a visual identity in your navigation sidebar and on category landing pages.

**4. Save the category**

Click **Save**. The category appears immediately in your dashboard sidebar and in the public navigation, ready for articles to be assigned to it.

> [!TIP]
>
> Create a **"Getting Started"** category first and pin it to the top of your navigation. New readers almost always look for onboarding content before anything else — making it the first thing they see reduces drop-off and support tickets.

## Moving Articles Between Categories

You have two ways to reassign an article to a different category:

**Drag and Drop**

In the **Articles** list view, grab any article card by its drag handle (the ⠿ icon on the left) and drop it onto the target category in the sidebar panel. The article moves instantly and your navigation updates in real time — no page refresh needed.

**Article Settings**

Open the article you want to move, then expand the **Settings** panel on the right-hand side. Use the **Category** dropdown to select the new category and click **Save**. This method is useful when you need to move an article while reviewing or editing its content at the same time.

## Sorting Articles Within a Category

Nulix offers three sort modes per category. To change the sort order, open the category settings and choose from the **Sort** dropdown:

| Sort Mode | Behaviour |
| - | - |
| **Manual** | You control the order by dragging and dropping articles in the category view. Changes save automatically. |
| **Alphabetical** | Articles sort A–Z by their title. New articles slot into the correct position automatically. |
| **Newest First** | Articles sort by published date, most recent at the top. Ideal for changelog or release-note categories. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> When you switch from **Manual** to an automatic sort mode, your custom ordering is preserved in the background. If you switch back to Manual later, your previous drag-and-drop order is restored.

## Using Tags to Cross-Reference Articles

Tags let you connect related articles that live in different categories. A single article can carry as many tags as you need, and readers can click any tag to see all articles that share it — even across category boundaries.

To add tags to an article, open the article and locate the **Tags** field in the right-hand **Settings** panel. Type a tag name and press **Enter** to add it. Tags are created on the fly — no pre-registration required.

**Tips for effective tagging:**

* Use consistent, lowercase tag names (`api`, `billing`, `getting-started`) to avoid duplicates
* Limit each article to 3–6 highly relevant tags; too many tags dilute their usefulness
* Review your tag list periodically from **Settings → Tags** to merge duplicates and remove unused tags

## URL Slugs and Content Structure

Every article and category in Nulix has a URL slug that forms part of the public address readers use to reach your content. Nulix generates slugs automatically from titles, and you can customise them at any time from the article's **Settings** panel.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Nulix auto-generates a URL slug from each article's title when the article is first saved (e.g., "How to Reset Your Password" becomes `/how-to-reset-your-password`). You can edit the slug at any time in the article's **Settings** panel before or after publishing. If you change the slug of a published article, Nulix automatically creates a **301 redirect** from the old URL so existing links don't break.

Category slugs follow the same pattern and form the first segment of the URL path: `/[category-slug]/[article-slug]`. Keeping slugs short, lowercase, and hyphen-separated is best practice for both SEO and readability.
