# Setting Visibility and Access Controls for Nulix Content

> Control who can read your Nulix articles and knowledge base using article-level, category-level, and KB-level visibility settings and audience gating.

Nulix gives you fine-grained control over who sees your content — from a single article all the way up to your entire knowledge base. You can make content fully public, restrict it to specific audience groups, or keep it hidden as a draft while you polish it. Understanding how visibility layers stack on top of one another lets you build a knowledge base that serves different reader types without duplicating content.

## Article-Level Visibility

Every article has its own visibility state, set in the **Visibility** panel on the right-hand side of the editor. Choose one of three states:

> **Public**
>
> The article is visible to **all visitors** — signed-in or not. Use this for general documentation, FAQs, and any content you want search engines to index and share freely.

> **Audience-Gated**
>
> The article is visible only to readers who belong to a specific **audience group** (for example, "Pro Plan" or "Enterprise Customers"). Visitors who are not part of the audience see a "You don't have access" message or are redirected, depending on your KB settings. See [Audience Gating](#audience-gating-walkthrough) below for a step-by-step setup guide.

> **Draft**
>
> The article is **not visible to any reader**. It is accessible only to workspace members with Editor or Admin roles. Use Draft to work on new content, stage updates, or park articles you're no longer sure about without deleting them. Draft articles do not appear in search results or navigation.

## Category-Level Visibility

You can hide an entire category — and all of the articles inside it — from your public knowledge base. This is useful when you're building out a new section that isn't ready to launch, or when you want to maintain internal reference content within Nulix without exposing it to readers.

To toggle category visibility:

**1. Open Categories**

Go to your dashboard and click **Categories** in the left sidebar.

**2. Edit the category**

Click the **⋯** menu next to the category name and select **Edit**.

**3. Toggle visibility**

In the category settings, switch the **Visibility** toggle to **Hidden**. Click **Save**. The category and all its articles disappear from the public navigation and search results immediately.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Hiding a category hides **all articles inside it**, regardless of those articles' individual visibility states. A Public article inside a Hidden category will not be visible to readers until the category is made visible again.

## Knowledge Base–Level Visibility

At the broadest level, you can control access to your entire knowledge base from **Settings → Knowledge Base → Visibility**. Nulix offers three KB-level modes:

| Mode | Who Can Access |
| - | - |
| **Fully Public** | Anyone on the internet — no sign-in required. |
| **Password Protected** | Visitors must enter a single shared password to access the KB. Ideal for beta documentation or partner portals. |
| **Private (Login Required)** | Only users who are logged in to Nulix (or your SSO provider) can access the KB. All unauthenticated visitors see a login prompt. |

## Audience Gating Walkthrough

Audience gating lets you publish content that is only visible to a defined group of readers — for example, customers on a paid plan, internal team members, or beta testers.

**1. Create an audience**

Go to **Settings → Audiences → New Audience**. Give the audience a name (e.g., "Enterprise Customers") and click **Save**. You can add members manually or sync them via the API.

**2. Assign members to the audience**

Open the audience and click **Add Members**. Enter email addresses individually or upload a CSV. Members receive an email invitation to access the gated content.

**3. Gate an article**

Open the article you want to restrict. In the **Visibility** panel, select **Audience-Gated**, then choose the audience from the dropdown. Click **Save** (or **Publish** if the article is new).

**4. Verify access**

Use the **Preview as Audience** button to see exactly what a member of that audience will see. Then test with a browser session that is not signed in to confirm unauthenticated visitors cannot access the content.

> [!TIP]
>
> You can assign multiple audience groups to a single article if you need to grant access to more than one group — for example, both "Beta Testers" and "Enterprise Customers". Hold **Cmd/Ctrl** while clicking to select multiple audiences in the dropdown.

## Visibility Options Summary

Use this table as a quick reference when deciding which visibility setting to apply:

| Visibility Setting | Anonymous Visitor | Signed-In User | Audience Member | Editor / Admin |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| **Article: Public** | ✅ Visible | ✅ Visible | ✅ Visible | ✅ Visible |
| **Article: Audience-Gated** | ❌ Blocked | ❌ Blocked\* | ✅ Visible | ✅ Visible |
| **Article: Draft** | ❌ Hidden | ❌ Hidden | ❌ Hidden | ✅ Visible |
| **Category: Hidden** | ❌ Hidden | ❌ Hidden | ❌ Hidden | ✅ Visible |
| **KB: Password Protected** | 🔒 Password required | 🔒 Password required | 🔒 Password required | ✅ Visible |
| **KB: Private** | ❌ Login prompt | ✅ Visible | ✅ Visible | ✅ Visible |

> [!NOTE]
>
> \* A signed-in user who is **not** a member of the required audience is treated the same as an anonymous visitor for audience-gated content — they see a "You don't have access" message.
