# Nulix Search: How It Works and How to Improve Results

> Understand how Nulix full-text search indexes your content, what signals affect ranking, and how to use search analytics to improve discoverability.

Search is one of the most important tools your readers have. Nulix gives every knowledge base a powerful, built-in search engine that scans all your published content in real time — so your readers can find what they need without browsing through categories or asking your team for help.

## How Search Works

Nulix full-text search indexes the **title**, **headings**, and **body content** of every published article in your knowledge base. When a reader types a query, Nulix scans that index and returns the most relevant matches, highlighted inline in the results list.

Search results are scoped to the knowledge base the reader is currently viewing. Readers cannot accidentally surface content from a different knowledge base they don't have access to.

## Search Ranking Factors

Not all matches are equal. Nulix ranks results using a combination of signals to surface the most useful article first:

| Signal | Weight |
| - | - |
| Title match | Highest |
| Heading match | High |
| Body content match | Medium |
| Recency (last updated) | Low |
| Popularity (click-through rate) | Low |

A query that matches an article's title will always rank above one that only appears in the body — so writing clear, descriptive titles is the single most impactful thing you can do to improve discoverability.

## Enabling and Disabling Search

Search is **enabled by default** for every knowledge base you create in Nulix. You can disable it per knowledge base if needed — for example, on a tightly scoped internal KB where you want readers to browse by category instead.

**1. Open your knowledge base settings**

Navigate to **Settings** in the Nulix sidebar and select the knowledge base you want to configure.

**2. Go to the Search tab**

Click the **Search** tab within the knowledge base settings panel.

**3. Toggle search off**

Switch **Enable Search** to the off position and click **Save Changes**. The search bar will no longer appear for readers of that KB.

## Search Analytics

Understanding what your readers search for — and where they fail to find answers — is essential for improving your content. Nulix surfaces this data in the **Analytics** dashboard.

> **Top Queries**
>
> See the most frequently searched terms so you know what content your readers care about most.

> **No-Results Queries**
>
> Identify searches that returned zero results — these are gaps in your knowledge base waiting to be filled.

> **Click-Through Rates**
>
> Track which search results readers actually click to measure how well your titles and descriptions match intent.

To access search analytics, go to **Analytics** in the Nulix sidebar and select the **Search** tab. You can filter by knowledge base and date range.

> [!TIP]
>
> Write descriptive article titles and strong opening paragraphs. Search engines — both Nulix's and external ones like Google — weight these areas most heavily. A title like "Reset Your Password in Nulix" will consistently outperform a vague one like "Password Help".

## Next Steps

Take search even further with Nulix's AI-powered search, which understands natural language questions and returns direct answer excerpts from your articles.
